Memoir is a Slice of Life

In week 7 of Writing 37, we are working on the Imitation Project Multimodal Memoir. In my memoir, I would want to address how mental health is often overlooked by people who do not understand it. I want to mention how I opened to my family about my anxiety, their reaction to it and how I dealt with the situation. For most part of my life, I grew up thinking that my family will always understand, support and be there for me. Until one day, when I had a panic attack, and no one understood what I was going through. It was challenging to open to everyone, when for so long I have kept my anxiety a secret. My family’s lack of awareness about anxiety and the social stigma associated with mental health conditions made it even worse.

I choose to address this in my memoir as it is important to understand and accept mental health issues to truly understand oneself. I want the readers of my memoir to know that they are not alone and do not have to struggle alone if they are suffering from any mental health issues or to even learn to open about such issues and not feel that they must hid it from everyone else. With the changing times, it is now important more than ever before to destigmatize mental health and embrace ourselves. It is not easy for me to open completely yet, so I consider the memoir as an opportunity to explore myself and find the courage to speak up about mental health. The topic might seem quite common these days with the increasing awareness. However, it is relevant to my story and experiences and hence I wish to address it in my memoir.
