My writing history:
The last English class I took in high school focused on analyzing short stories, poems and plays.
I had learned how to read and comprehend William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice and have explored various genres in writing such as essays, letters, emails, notices, articles, debates, speeches, etc.
The Merchant of Venice
Self-assessment:
I consider myself to be a creative writer and a mediocre communicator. I enjoy writing creative works involving my imagination. However, I would like to improve my critical writing skills.
I rate myself to be an excellent reader as I have experience with reading across various genres.
I can read and comprehend complicated written texts like academic texts, historic articles and scientific reports.
I like to read fiction novels, poetry and lifestyle websites regularly.
My problem areas for reading, writing and communicating are non-fiction and documentaries. I think that I find such areas challenging as I do not consider them to be interesting. However, I have learned to read and write even in instances where I find the genre boring.
I excel in areas of writing and reading fictional works. I have written short stories based on science-fiction and a few poems. I like to express my creativity through my writing and allow my thoughts to beyond reality while writing fiction.
Language and Grammar Diagnostic quiz

On the Language and Grammar Diagnostic quiz, I found the questions for italics and sentence fragments challenging.
I was surprised to see that I made mistakes that could be easily avoided.
About Writing 37:
Writing 37: Critical Reading and Rhetoric is a lower division writing class at the University of California, Irvine. As a part of the class, students are expected to complete Genre Analysis, Imitation Project and a Final Portfolio.
The course objectives are to develop genre awareness, multimodal writing, critical reading and writing using metacognitive skills. The theme for winter quarter 2022 is A Slice of Life: Memoir - The Rhetoric of Home, Family, and Self, with an emphasis on identity, language, and ethnicity.
The grading in the class is based on a grade contract that states that students can earn a grade of “B” if they attend lecture, complete weekly assignments on time and meet the minimum requirements for the major assignments. ‘Buffs’ add points for high quality work while ‘dings’ deduce points for the grade.
